Last week, the editorial team packed into a caravan and drove out to the Hamptons for our second annual development retreat. We brought the development, while our host, Josh Bank, brought the retreat (okay, he had a few ideas, too, but the emphasis was on the retreat). We got to hang out at his beautiful house, eat great food, and get some sun by the pool. A few of us even took a late night walk down to the beach to see the stars.
But it wasn’t all fun and games. When we weren’t snacking by the pool, we were brainstorming ideas and sharing inspiration from newspaper articles and movies we love. Over cocktails and dinner, we discussed friends of ours who would make interesting characters (yes, we talked about you). We played around with ridiculous mash-ups of our favorite books, from picture books to adult non-fiction. Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman meets Bright Lights, Big City by Jay McInerney? Instant classic, naturally!
But the best conversations came out of nowhere. Seriously, we had a more extensive debate about evil clowns than you can imagine, and we might know a little more than we wanted to about Josh’s first kiss.
Could the next Pretty Little Liars or The Vampire Diaries have been born last week? Time will tell!
